Why is my hair changing color???

Both my brother and I have dark auburn hair. Lately though we've noticed that our hair is lightening to a more coppery reddish color and less of the brown. His beard to is completely red in spots but dark brown in others its quite strange.

Our mom had red hair before it turned gray and our dad has black brown hair (but his mom had red hair too). I'm 20 and my brother is 17.

It it normal for haircolor to just change like that?

I mean were not little anymore, and were both past the puberty thing and we haven't been out in the sun any more than we usually are. Also, we're both healthy and relatively stress free.

Anyone have an answer as to why this would happen to BOTH of us around the same time?

Maybe a change in the hardness of your water. Since your hair is lightening, probably a change from harder water to softer. Hard water leaves mineral deposits on hair that darken it.

It could also be genetic, my hair went from auburn to darker reddish brown at that age. Though water hardness was a factor in that too.

Hair generally darkens for a year or so before it turns gray, but that doesn't seem likely to be what's going on here.

Have you switched shampoos (maybe a new one removes old mineral deposits), bought a water softener, moved to a new area with softer water, done maintenance on a water softener in your home? Maybe even could be a change in your town's water if you live where you have town water.

I think its probably in your genes. Like you said your mother had red hair. When I was younger I had natural bright blond hair then it started to turn brown now I am a total brunette.

I think its normal. I wouldnt worry about it.

i really want to dye my hair so that it has a red tint to it. i DO NOT want red hair. more like a deep red/maroon kind of tint to it. but, i have brown hair. not DARK brown.. not LIGHT brown. just.. brown. should i go for a darker brown %26amp; then after a couple of weeks put a red color in it? i've wanted my hair to have a red tint to it for a while. but, i've been kind of scared because i didn't really have much of tan going on.. now, i do.. so, i think it would look good! i know to use a semi-permanent dye, but, do you think i should do the darker brown first.. then to the reddish color? help.

ok heres my advice on dying hair:

honestly, do it ONLY if you REALLY want to, otherwise youll regret it once the dye is out and your hair isnt as nice as it was before.

i say, if you really wana do it, go with a auburn color with slight red highlights i have brown hair too, and since a got a bodywave ive had a slight redish tint to it..... but im not saying go get a freaking bodywave those suckers are expencive, but im saying go with a shade a bit darker than yours with red highlights. ask a hair stylist too... thatl help.

No, you won't need to dye your hair a dark brown first, unless you plan on dyeing your hair dark brown and putting a red rinse over the top.

I recommend:

You should be able to find a red-ish brown coloured hair dye (supermarket, pharmacist) that can go straight over your existing hair colour to achieve the result you're after.

If in doubt, I recommend trying a red/brown or auburn RINSE over your hair and see how that works out. This will only last a week (at most) and will give you enough time to decide how you feel about the colour and you'll then have a better idea abotu what to shop around for when you want to get a permanent or semi-permanent dye.

When my brown and gray roots start becoming noticeable, however, it doesn't look quite as hot. I wish I could color every 3-4 weeks, but I'm afraid to color my hair more often than every 5-6 weeks. Is coloring hair more frequently than that damaging? How often can you safely color your hair?

What can you do about roots in the meantime? Can you rotate permanent with non-permanent dye? Are there any good products you can use to temporarily color roots? (I apply a tinted toner called "Stay Red" to visible roots after washing my hair, but it's hard to apply. I wish they had a mascara-type applicator.)

your colorist will tell you how often you should color safely. there is something called hair mascara that will fill in your roots. red dye molecules are HUGE compared to our hairs, thats why it comes out so easy. use shampoo specifically for red hair.

You can just touch up your roots every 2-3 weeks, but to completely color it I would say between 6-8 weeks.

For this you're going to want to see a professional colorist. With your coloring and natural tones, I'm afraid the boxed stuff will not give you results that you'd be happy with. They'll either be too orange, or too violet.

You want to stick within your natural range, and it will take a one-on-one session with a book of swatches and proper lighting to get just the right result.

With the boxes... you might end up recoloring and coloring again to get it right on your own, which will lead to fading and an unrepeatable color once you settle on one you like. Since the results happened over top of artificial pigments.

It will be more time and cost effective to choose a good colorist and have it turn out right the first time. If you choose the wrong color on your own, then you're looking at corrective coloring costs.

I have hair around 3 inches past my shoulders, and it's mostly wavy and curly in some parts, and it's really thin. I am thinking about growing it really long to weigh it down a bit, but I am also wondering if I should cut it like in my picture. I need something that is very low maintenance, I can't afford a straitener, and I don't mind brushing out long hair. I also want to dye it either dark brown, black or dirty blonde, I already tried red and it turned out like fire truck red, so even if red hair dye won't make my hair like that again, I am not taking the risk of making my head look like it needs to be put out. if your hair is really thin then letting it grow longer will only make it look thinner.going to dark or to light will also make it look thinner, try a medium shade of blonde or brown good luck i hope this helped
