Dark red to natural black ??

I have long dark red hair, dark brown naturally..I have warm-toned, olive skin more than cooler-toned skin..I want to dye my hair a natural black, not jet black, but I'm not sure what shade to go with..I don't want any hint of red or blue in it, just more natural.. Would that mean I would need an ash base? Am I able to dye over the red without there being a red tint when I dye it natural black ??

There may be a red tint no matter what dye you use...a professional would probably do something to remove some of the existing dye from your hair because it's hard to know how it will react to a new layer of dye.

Your hair is porous, so right now the cuticle is coated with a color. Coating over it without doing a step inbetween to strip out the color, even though you'll be going darker, could lead to unpredictable results. If you don't want to end up as a freakshow, you might want to pay someone to do this for you. A good dye job on long hair will probably be about $115.

An ash base will keep some of the red tones and brassiness out if they're natural, but it's hard to say if it will help with the dyed tones. If you don't use a semi-permanent low-qual color like manic panic or an herbal-based color, and the box doesn't say blue-black, you shouldn't have to worry about blue tones.

L'Oreal Natural Match No-Ammonia Color-Calibrated Creme Hair Color, Natural Black 3C has an ash base...you might be able to find it at a Sally or other beauty store, but they also sell it from drugstore.com.

when you dye your hair ask for red highlights. that would soften the blackness and enhance your natural color.

If you are going to try doing it yourself I recommend Garnier Nutrisse. Their natural black color is the best I have found. It is black with brown undertones.

Maybe the first time you should have it done at a hairdressers, that way you can explain everything exactly to them, and get answers for home coloring next time.

DON'T DO IT. Once you dye your hair black you can never go back. I dyed my hair black last year and after 150 dollors later I can now dye it brown. You can't go over black dye. I tried. trust me !
