Is salon hair dyes better for hair than do it yourself dyes?

About a year ago I decided to dye my hair red. I went to Target and picked up one of their do it yourself things that was semipermanent, so it would only last a month or so. However, when I used it I immediately started losing hair. I ended up losing 1/3 of my hair. Someone told me salon hair dyes are less harsh on hair than do it yourself hair dyes. Is this true? Everyone told me my red hair was much more natural looking than my natural hair colour (a nasty greenish/blonde) and I absolutely loved how it looked. However, I've since cut my hair very short and can't risk losing that much hair. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't necessarily think salon colors are less harsh than store bought. Many of the store bought color brands make a professional line of color that stylist use. It is true that some color uses less ammonia in their product than others(ammonia can damage hair), but many times the peroxide used is the same strength we would use.

Plus semi-permanent hair color is the least damaging of hair colors because it doesn't have peroxide in it and it can't really mkae your hair lighter only darker by "coating" your hair with the color instead of opening your cuticle layer to alter the color.

In my pro opinion I'm not sure what caused your hair loss, but I'm not so sure it was the color. You may have a different reason for your hair loss(diet, medical, over use of hot tools), but you are right to be cautious of coloring your hair. No matter what the cause of your hair loss, your hair is in a more fragile cond. and you need to be careful. I would see a pro and discuss with them your desired look and your fears(it's not gonna cost you anything to ask). Go to a few places and get a few opinions. They can assess your hair cond. (which I can't thru the computer). Then make a decision.

Hope this helped.

Yes..they are better they can mix the color you want so the chemiclas they use are less than what you would find on a shelf at the store

Is salon hair dyes better for hair than do it yourself dyes?

Yes, pick a good salon and go there. They are professionals and do the job really well. Furthermore, if they mess up and cause you damage, you could always sue them or something... =P

Is salon hair dyes better for hair than do it yourself dyes?

yes, this is definitely true, the salons color is much less harsh than any store bought color-if you're going darker than there's little to no ammonia in their products but if you're going lighter (as in blonde) then it's a hi-lift which is bleach and you always risk damaging hair when lightning.

if you like red and it looks good on you then by all means go for it-just get it done professionally.

Is salon hair dyes better for hair than do it yourself dyes?

No. It's exactly the same product/ingredients. The difference is that hairdressers (supposedly) know which product will suit your hair type, how long to leave it on and how to tell if something is going wrong. Natural red hair is the most difficult colour to dye, so given your experience, I suggest you go to the salon at least until you have seen what they are doing a few times and have asked what products they are using.

PS. Beware, salons will happily lead you to believe the products are different because they want your money - but this is simply NOT TRUE

I DON'T KNOW ,IF THE DYES ARE BETTER OR NOT . I THINK IT,HAS A LOT TO DO WITH THE TIMING (how long you leave it on your hair.)
