My puppy has a red line on his throat where the hair has stopped growing what's wrong?

He is a male rottie/german shepherd mix and i think it is because he pulls so much when he's on his leash. It's about the width of his collar what should i do?

You should train your dog to heel. I work with rescue pitt bulls-- training them. Because these dogs are SO strong, I use a prong collar. They look mean, but I have never had a dog hurt from one. But I guess it is possible to use them abusively... every tool is a weapon if you hold it right.

I like them because they make a sound when they start to get tight, so the dog's associate that sound with what they are doing wrong. Also, they do most of the work. I hold the leash at the same place, and the collar teaches the dog where the boundaries are. So, my arms aren't tired after a day of training. I have to hide the prong collars at my house, because if anyone accidently touches one both of my giant dogs come running in for their walk.

1. Get a wider collar

2. Get a Haltie instead of a collar (it's made like a horse's halter)

3. Train your dog to heel so he stops pulling.

A big dog like yours should be better trained than that. You need to be able to control him, not the other way around. Basic obedience classes would really help!

If your dog pulls on the leash a lot, and the spots where the hair is wearing up measure up to where the collar normally sits, then that may very well be the reason. The question to ask yourself, too, is - if the hair is wearing off because he's pulling so much, what damage is it doing underneath the skin, to his neck and trachea?

You may need to consider a different kind of collar along with some training in order to teach your dog not to pull on the leash. Leash training a strong dog like a Rottie or German Shepherd can be a challenge because these dogs are strong, they're very big, and they're also very intelligent.

What type of collar do you use? A flat nylon or leather collar? If that's the case, when your dog pulls, he is getting rewarded for pulling. The flat collars usually lay around the bottom end of the dog's neck, which is also the strongest part of the dog's neck - allowing the dog to put his full weight into pulling.

You may want to try a halter, harness, or collar designed to help with pulling. There are many different kinds and what works best will depend on your individual dog. A trainer should be able to help you find one that will work best for you.

With a strong, large breed dog, a prong collar can be a good solution. Again, it depends on the dog, and the collar is a tool - not a permanent solution. If you were planning to try a prong collar, I would advise that you do so under the supervision of a trainer, or at least read information about the prong collar on the Leerburg site, here - http://leerburg.com/fit-prong.htm - as many people don't even know how to fit and use them correctly.

maybe it's just because the collar is to tight or it can be that your pet has fleas.

You could get him a thicker collar. To help with pulling, I suggest a front-hook harness. It doesn't hurt the dog and it discourages pulling.

make sure the collar is big enough,,you can make it bigger or you may have to get a bigger one,,,if you use flea %26amp; tick meds down the neck it could be a reaction from that,,,if not then try the halter.
